Reduce and Reuse

Though recycling is good for the environment because this activity saves raw materials and reduces pollution, Waste Reduction and Reuse are even better for the environment than Recycling!

Examples—using reusable shopping bags cuts down on the number of plastic or paper bags needed and cuts the number of bags disposed of.

Construction and Demolition Materials

Nearly 20% of the waste delivered to Prairie SWA is considered C&D—construction and demolition. We encourage contractors and do-it-yourselfers to look for ways to keep usable items and materials out of Iowa’s landfills.

Broken concrete, brick and other fill materials should be taken to other sites if possible—for example the City of Creston yard waste site accepts this material.

Cabinets, dimensional lumber, windows, doors, brick and other items can all be salvaged.

Asbestos Containing Material—(ACM): Lots of building materials used to contain asbestos. When asbestos gets into the air, it can cause severe health problems.

Call Prairie Solid Waste Agency at 866-282-8787 to get more information on identifying and disposing of ACM.
